Global Anglican Leaders Step Forward with Renewed Commitment to the Great Commission

This month, church leaders from across the worldwide Anglican family recently gathered in Abuja, Nigeria, representing millions of believers across continents and cultures. During this global gathering, Pastor Rick Warren joined virtually to share the Finishing the Task vision — encouraging leaders to seize the historic opportunity before the Church in this generation.

While the event itself marked an important moment of fellowship and strategic conversation, the deeper significance lay in the shared commitment to the mission Jesus gave his followers: to take the Good News to everyone, everywhere.

A Historic Opportunity Before the Global Church

As the year 2033 approaches — marking two thousand years since the birth of the Church at Pentecost — believers around the world are recognizing a unique moment in history. For the first time ever, the global Church has the resources, technology, and growing unity needed to work toward ensuring that every person has access to the Good News.

Finishing the Task exists to help catalyze this movement.

Rather than building a new organization or denomination, the initiative focuses on collaboration — bringing together networks, churches, and ministries to accelerate Great Commission progress. Pastor Rick reminded leaders that finishing the task will require shared vision, shared urgency, and shared action.

The Five Global Goals Guiding the Movement

At the heart of the Finishing the Task vision are five clear priorities — often called the “Five B’s” — that provide practical focus for churches and mission leaders worldwide:

  • Bibles in every heart language so that everyone can encounter God’s Word personally
  • Believers sharing the Good News everywhere as everyday witnesses in their communities
  • Bodies of Christ in every community through the planting and strengthening of local churches
  • Breakthrough prayer for every nonbeliever as a foundation for spiritual awakening
  • Bridges of love to every heart through practical acts of compassion that reflect the love of Christ

These goals help translate the Great Commission from a general calling into a measurable mission.

Following the Ministry Model of Jesus

Pastor Rick also emphasized that finishing the task requires more than strategy — it requires returning to the priorities Jesus modeled in his own ministry.

He often summarizes these priorities with the acrostic P.E.A.C.E.:

  • Proclaim the Good News
  • Equip disciples
  • Alleviate suffering
  • Continue in prayer
  • Establish churches

When churches align their ministries around these biblical actions, ordinary believers are mobilized and communities are transformed.

Collaboration for the Sake of the Mission

A defining characteristic of the Finishing the Task movement is its emphasis on partnership. The global Church is richly diverse, yet united by a shared calling to make disciples of all nations.

Pastor Rick encouraged Anglican leaders — along with believers from many traditions — to see one another as allies in mission. By working together across cultures and networks, the Church can multiply its impact and move forward with greater clarity and momentum.

Moments like this gathering in Abuja highlight the growing desire among leaders worldwide to cooperate in evangelism, discipleship, and church health. Such collaboration is essential if the global Church is to faithfully steward the opportunity before it.

Moving Forward with Hope

As leaders returned to their nations and congregations, the vision remained clear: this generation can play a significant role in helping ensure that every person has the opportunity to hear the Good News.

Finishing the task will not be accomplished by one ministry or one movement. It will be the result of millions of believers living on mission — praying faithfully, sharing boldly, serving compassionately, and establishing healthy churches.

Together, the global Church is stepping forward with renewed faith and determination. And as we look toward 2033, we do so with confidence that God is already at work, drawing people to himself and inviting his Church to participate in the greatest mission on earth.
