Within Sight — A Historic Event!

This year at the Within Sight conference where we saw over 280 ministries represented, history was made for the Finishing the Task network. At the start of the conference, the announcement was made that our Unengaged, Unreached, People Group list was down to 343 people groups. Imagine the joy that we felt as people and organizations throughout the conference were moved by the Spirit of God to make commitments to reach the remaining groups!

On the last day of the conference, amidst worship, prayer and the fervent seeking of God's will, the final people group on our list were finally spoken for. The room was filled with deafening applause as that final people group that previously was on no one's "radar" for sharing the Gospel was finally adopted! This means that every group on our list is now spoken for — every group has a commitment from the Body of Christ to have at least two workers bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ within the next two years!  The goal of starting in all of these people groups is finally Within Sight!

So what does that mean for our list? The work is not yet finished. Many of our groups are under-engaged. Some that are now engaged, will fall back into unengagement. Most groups do not have basic tools to start a church planting movement. Lastly, some of the organizations and individuals that have made these final commitments will need others to come and work alongside them to fulfill their commitments. Will you prayerfully ask our wonderful Lord and Saviour if He wants your church or organization to adopt one of these final people groups? For more information, please contact us and we will be happy to help you on your road to adopting and engaging a UUPG.

What is the task?

Today there are 343 Unengaged, Unreached People Groups, over 500 in population and still dwelling in their ancestral homeland, who are beyond the reach of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. These approximately 8.5 million people are spiritually lost and helpless, like sheep having no Shepherd. Among them Christ remains unknown, unacknowledged, and unadored.

These 343 are perhaps the least of the lost, the neediest of the needy. They are believed to be unengaged with the Gospel, which means that no church, no mission agency— no one has yet taken responsibility to tell them of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. These people are at the very heart of the unfinished Great Commission task. Can one church actually make a difference among these 343 unengaged, unreached peoples of the world?

With the enabling of the One true living, all-powerful God, one commitment can make a difference. Will you be one of the ones?

The Vision

To see every people group in the world engaged with an indigenously led church planting movement.

The Mission

To form a global network of local churches, denominations, church planters, and mission agencies that are willing to work together in partnership to see church planting initiatives launched among these 343 Unengaged, Unreached People Groups (UUPGs).

About two-thirds of the world’s population are oral communicators. That is, they prefer or rely on a non-literate approach to learning.

Oral cultures tend to preserve and transmit their culture through stories, proverbs, poems, songs, dance and such. Primary oral societies pass along everything that matters from one generation to another without putting anything into a written format.

Yet, the vast majority of Christian mission work today is conducted through literate means that oral communicators simply do not understand. Since so many unreached people are oral communicators, Finishing the Task recognizes the importance of reaching these groups with oral strategies. As communicators of the Gospel, it is our responsibility to present the message in a way that oral learners can understand.

A highly effective way to reach oral cultures is by telling the stories of the Bible. Oral people love to hear the stories over and over again, memorizing them word-for-word. Since story telling is highly relational and social, Bible stories can spread rapidly within a people group. Many Finishing the Task partners have proven that Bible storying is effective for evangelism, discipleship, church planting, and even leadership training.
