Bible Translation Day: A Global Movement Is Bringing God’s Word to Everyone, Everywhere

Around the world, thousands of translators, churches, ministries, and local believers are working toward a vision that once seemed almost impossible:

That everyone, everywhere would have access to God’s Word in a language they can understand.

On September 30, Bible Translation Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate that work—and the remarkable progress being made as the global Church works together.

Today, Scripture is available in some form in more than 4,100 languages. Translation work is underway in thousands more. And according to the latest global data, the number of languages still needing Bible translation to begin has fallen to 543.

The finish line hasn’t been reached. But it is becoming increasingly possible to see.

A Task Too Big for Any One Organization

One of the most encouraging stories in Bible translation isn’t simply how much progress is being made; it’s how that progress is happening.

Bible translation today is a deeply collaborative effort. Local churches and language communities work alongside translators, linguists, technology specialists, prayer networks, funders, and ministries around the world.

Organizations including American Bible Society, Biblica, Deaf Bible Society, Lutheran Bible Translators, Pioneer Bible Translators, Seed Company, SIL, unfoldingWord, United Bible Societies, The Word for the World, and Wycliffe Bible Translators are among those collaborating through illumiNations, an alliance working toward shared Scripture-access goals by 2033.

And those organizations represent only part of a much larger global movement.

Increasingly, translation is also being led from within the communities that need Scripture themselves. Local believers aren’t simply recipients of translated Scripture; they are translators, leaders and partners helping determine how God’s Word can best be understood and used in their communities.

It’s a picture of what can happen when the Body of Christ brings different gifts, resources, and expertise to a shared mission.

More Than Words on a Page

And today, making Scripture accessible doesn’t always mean putting a printed Bible into someone’s hands.

For oral cultures, the first Scripture someone encounters may be an audio recording or an oral Bible story. For Deaf communities, true access can require translation into the sign language they use every day.

There are more than 350 sign languages around the world, and ministries including Deaf Bible Society, Deaf Missions, DOOR International, and others are working with Deaf leaders and communities to advance sign language Bible translation.

Technology is creating new possibilities as well—helping translation teams collaborate, accelerating portions of the translation process, and making Scripture available through audio, video, and digital formats.

But technology alone isn’t finishing the task. People are.

Behind every translation are believers who understand their language and culture, churches committed to reaching their communities, translators doing careful work, organizations sharing expertise, people generously funding projects, and Christians faithfully praying.

Why Bible Translation Matters to the Great Commission

At Finishing the Task, Bibles is one of the Five B goals guiding our shared pursuit of the Great Commission.

The goal is simple but enormous: that everyone would have access to Scripture in a language they can understand.

Because access to God’s Word strengthens every part of the Great Commission.

Scripture equips Believers to know and share the Good News. It gives Bodies of Christ a foundation for teaching, discipleship, and multiplication. It fuels Breakthrough Prayer with the promises of God. And it helps Bridges of Love point people toward the God whose love his Word reveals.

A translated Bible isn’t the end of the Great Commission.

It is one of the foundational tools that helps make discipleship possible for generations to come.

Working Toward 2033

The global Bible translation movement is also pursuing an ambitious milestone that closely aligns with the vision of Finishing the Task.

Through the illumiNations alliance, Bible translation partners are working toward shared All Access Goals by 2033: for 95% of people to have access to a full Bible, 99.96% to have access to a New Testament and 100% to have access to at least some Scripture.

Today, approximately 2,873 language groups still have limited or no access to Scripture, including hundreds that do not yet have a single verse in the language they understand best.

There is still significant work ahead.

But compare that challenge with where the Church has been.

For much of modern missions history, reaching every language with Scripture was a vision for some distant generation. Today, organizations that once worked largely along their own tracks are collaborating. Local believers are taking greater leadership. New technology and translation methods are accelerating the work. Churches and donors are rallying around common goals.

The question is increasingly shifting from “Could this ever happen?” to “What will it take for us to finish?”

Everyone, Everywhere

Revelation 7:9 gives us a picture of a multitude before God’s throne “from every nation, tribe, people and language.”

Bible Translation Day reminds us that there are still people waiting to encounter the story of Jesus in the language they understand best.

But it also gives us reason to celebrate.

Every completed translation. Every newly translated chapter. Every audio recording. Every sign language video. Every local translator trained. Every church that joins the work. Every person who prays or gives.

Each is another step toward a day when no community is left waiting for God’s Word.

No organization can accomplish that alone.

But together, the global Church can continue closing the Bible gap—and work toward the day when everyone, everywhere has access to Scripture.
